Tsurumaru Castle Ruins (Goromon Gate)
Tsurumaru Castle was the home of the Shimazu Clan, who started construction in 1601. The Goromon Gate was directly in front of the castle’s residential complex, but it was destroyed in a fire in 1873. Reconstruction was promoted as a new symbol of Kagoshima, and in April 2020, construction finished and the Goromon Gate appeared from 150 years out of the past. Standing at around 20m high and wide, this is the largest castle gate in Japan.
