Aso Shrine and Aso Monzen Shopping Street
It is said that Aso Shrine has more than 2,500 years of history, and 12 gods are enshrined here. There are 461 shrines where these resident gods are worshipped throughout the prefecture, as many as in the Kanto and Tohoku regions. The series of agricultural festivals that are held in this shrine have been designated national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties.
Next to Aso Shrine is Monzen Shopping Street. The natural spring water here is known as “Mizuki,” or “water base,” and is revered as the waters of the gods, and waters of perpetual youth and longevity. There are numerous well-established stores, stylish cafés, and eateries here, and you can enjoy this shopping street as part of a walking course.
