Munakata Taisha Shrine

FUKUOKA CULTURE

This is one of the oldest shrines in Japan. Since ancient times, this shrine has been venerated as housing the god of paths, and many visitors pray for safe voyages and travels. In July 2017, the Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region were registered as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

Around 10 minutes by bus from JR Togoeki-mae to Munakatataisha-mae.
A minute on foot from Nishitetsu Bus Munakatataisha-mae.

Around 20 minutes from the Wakamiya I.C. or 25 minutes from the Koga I.C. on the Kyushu Expressway

Best season: All year

Point: The Miare Festival takes place from October 1 to 3 (fall festival). Around 400 fishing boats, decorated with colorful flags and cloths, take part in transporting the god upon the sea for approximately an hour. This Shinto ritual is one of the most famous in Japan.
