Enjoy the local climate and scenery from your window on one of the many JR Kyushu trains with a design and story where riding them is an event in itself. The Hayato no Kaze limited express, runs from Kagoshima-chuo Station via Kirishima Onsen Station, renown for its hot springs, to the yusui spring town at Yoshimatsu Station, is one such train. Enjoy scenery unique to Kagoshima, such as Kinko (Kagoshima) Bay, where Sakurajima is located, and the lush Kirishima highlands, as well as tours of wooden station buildings that evoke the Meiji period, and delicacies such as local station bento lunches.

Point

The train makes short stops for a few minutes at several unique stations. Kareigawa Station is one of those stations. Leisurely tour of the 110-year-old wooden station building as time permits. On weekends and holidays only, the station offers its handmade "Hyakunen no Tabimonogatari Kareigawa" (Hundred-year Journey: Kareigawa) bento lunch, made in the image of the historic station. Inside, you will find the lunch filled with rice cooked with shiitake cultivated on wood logs and bamboo shoots, along with a variety of locally-grown "mountain dishes" that include Satsuma sweet potato tempura, and miso-glazed eggplant and pumpkin! There are limited quantities of this popular bento lunch which quickly sells out. If you make a reservation by two days before boarding, you can purchase it while on the Hayato no Kaze limited express, so be sure to inquire in advance at the JR Kyushu Midori no Madoguchi or travel desk.
